The British Read is a weekly online newsletter exploring British history, culture, heritage, art, and travel and many many more topics.

Each week, we publish one carefully researched story about Britain, the stories you should know, and the ones you didn’t realise you were missing. One week we might unpack the symbolism of monarchy; the next, we might explore David Hockney’s impact on British visual culture, the meaning behind the kilt, or the history of graduation robes. There’s no fixed formula here. Britain isn’t one thing, and neither is this newsletter.

What connects every edition is context: how architecture, art, fashion, power, and place shape culture and how culture, in turn, shapes us.

Why The British Read exist

​

This started with theory.

While studying architecture, many people found theory and context dull. I found it electrifying. Those lectures were where everything clicked, where buildings became political, fashion became language, and history became alive. After a decade working as a designer, the practical side burned me out. What I missed wasn’t making things, it was thinking about them. Asking why things look the way they do. What they mean. Who they serve. Where they come from. The British Read is a return to that space: curiosity without rush, depth without pretension, and storytelling that leaves you thinking “wow! I never knew that.”. 

This newsletter is for people who love culture not because it’s trendy, but because it’s meaningful.
